Abstract Submission Guidelines

LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACTS
The Canadian Stroke Congress welcomes the submission of late-breaking scientific abstracts for recently completed clinical trials and or large observational studies that feature recent high-impact scientific discoveries where data was not available for submission during the main call for abstracts.

Abstracts submitted during this time that do not meet the criteria of a late-breaking abstract will not be reviewed or considered for inclusion.

Clinical Trials
• Most late-breaking trials will be included as poster presentations, some with brief oral communications.
• One or two completed late-breaking abstracts may be selected for an oral presentation if results have significant impact on stroke care delivery
• Clinical trial information boards provide an excellent opportunity for organizers and supporters to:
o Inform Congress delegates about planned or ongoing registered clinical trials in Canada.
o Educate the Canadian stroke community about the status and objectives of registered clinical trials in Canada.
o Identify and recruit potential new centres.
o Registered trials should be in the advanced planning, recruitment or follow-up phase.
o Trials that have been completed and published will not be accepted.
o On-going clinical trials will not be peer reviewed or published in the International Journal of Stroke and will only be accepted as a display poster.
o Ongoing clinical trials should be randomized clinical trials or prospective observational cohort studies.

Abstract Submission Guidelines
  • Abstracts are welcome from national and international applicants from all disciplines across the continuum of care, including healthcare providers, researchers, system leaders, and people with lived experience.
  • Authors may submit multiple abstracts as first author or co-author.
  • Abstracts may be submitted in English or French and presentations at Congress may be given in either language.
  • Each abstract should be a maximum of 250 words (excluding title and authors) and should consist of four separate paragraphs when appropriate:
    • Background: briefly describe the problem or issue being addressed
    • Methods: describe how the study was performed
    • Results: provide results if available, or clearly indicate what results will be available at time of presentation.
      • One table and/or figure may be included if required.
    • Conclusions: describe what the authors conclude from these results
  • Applicants must select one of the following categories at submission where their abstract fits best:
    • Acute stroke management
    • Prevention of stroke (primary and secondary)
    • Stroke rehabilitation, recovery, and community care
    • Stroke systems of care
    • Stroke Nursing
    • Engagement of people with lived experience with stroke
  • All abstracts will be peer-reviewed.
o Highly ranked late-breaking abstracts may be featured either as oral presentations (eight minutes + two minutes for questions), or traditional paper display posters.
  • Learning objectives (at least one and up to three) must be submitted with the abstract.
  • Research presented in abstracts must conform to CIHR guidelines for experimental procedures. All investigations involving humans and animals must have been conducted in conformity with these principles.
  • Authors will be asked for confirmation that all presented works are original works or works that have been properly cited, and/or have obtained appropriate permissions to include.

Information for presenters following acceptance of an abstract:

  • Notifications of acceptance will be e-mailed by August 9, 2019.
  • All presenters must register for the Congress and will be required to pay the appropriate registration fee. Abstract presenters do not receive complimentary registration
  • Abstract notifications will be sent out prior to the end of the early-bird registration period
  • All accepted presenters are required to complete a Conflict-of-Interest declaration form.  Authors must declare any financial interest in a product discussed in the presentation. In general, generic names should always be used rather than specific trade names
  • Display posters will be available for viewing to all delegates throughout the Congress. Poster presenters will be asked to be available at their poster to answer questions at set times during Congress
  • The accepted abstracts will be published in the International Journal of Stroke Online, in early October, 2019.

Note: Closed to new submissions.
